What To Expect Before And After Sclerotherapy Treatment

You finally made the decision after last summer you would never again wear long pants to cover up your spider veins and varicose veins on a hot day. You realized it was time to do something else. If so, then you should read this article about what to expect before and after sclerotherapy treatment for spider and varicose veins.

In-Office Sclerotherapy Treatment

Sclerotherapy is a minimally invasive treatment for both spider veins and small varicose veins.

It works by an injection into the vein to close it. The chemical solution Vein Center at Brinton Lake uses irritates the blood vessel lining making it expand, stick together, and form a scar. This action closes off the vein and blood flow. The entire procedure takes 15 to 30 minutes. Recovery is quick, but it takes weeks or months to see full results.

That’s why now is the perfect time to have this procedure.

What To Expect Before Sclerotherapy

There are some things to avoid prior to sclerotherapy.

You should discontinue antibiotics 7 to 10 days before and after the procedure or your skin will become stained, especially tetracycline and minocycline. Talk to your primary care physician about switching medications.

No aspirin, ibuprofen, or other anti-inflammatory medications for 48 hours before and after the procedure. You may take acetaminophen like Tylenol.

Discontinue prednisone 48 hours before and after sclerotherapy as it lessens the effectiveness of the injected chemicals.

Other things to do prior to the procedure include:

  • Use no lotion on your legs before or after
  • Bring a pair of shorts or loose-fitting clothing to wear during the procedure
  • Stop taking Vitamin E
  • Avoid alcohol or nicotine

After Sclerotherapy

You will be able to return to activities immediately including driving yourself home. It is recommended that you walk on the day of the procedure.

  • Avoid exercise and sports for at least 10 days
  • Wear compression stockings for 3 to 7 days
  • No sun for 2 weeks, as dark spots can form
  • No warm baths, hot tubs, or saunas for 2 to 3 days

Note all the medications to avoid as above.

Some patients require another treatment to achieve their desired results, however by next summer, you will be able to show off your legs.
