What are Spider Veins?

Spider veins are small veins beneath the skin that are often red, blue, or purple that commonly develop on the thighs, legs, calves, and ankles. Common risk factors for developing spider veins can be:

  • Genetics
  • Poor circulation
  • Hormonal changes, including being pregnant and taking birth control
  • Being overweight

Sclerotherapy

The gold-standard for spider vein removal is sclerotherapy. It is a minimally invasive procedure done at our vein clinic in Glen Mills, PA, without anesthesia, that will remove spider veins. Sclerotherapy is the injection of a liquid agent into the spider veins through a tiny needle. The needle is so small that a numbing agent is not even required. The introduced agent painlessly displaces the blood in the vein and interacts with proteins in the vein wall to seal it. The vein will collapse and blood will reroute through healthier veins.

Before sclerotherapy, your vein doctor will talk with you about avoiding certain medications before the sclerotherapy procedure, including over-the-counter drugs and antibiotics.

Sclerotherapy Procedure Recovery

After the procedure, you’ll be able to walk around immediately and return to your normal activities. We recommend that you wear compression stockings for the next week, although you may choose to wear them longer. Patients are also encourage to walk around the day of the procedure.

Over the subsequent weeks after sclerotherapy, the spider veins begin to fade away. The appearance of the veins and treatment sites can change in the first few days following sclerotherapy. Depending on the size of the spider veins, it can take three weeks to several months for the spider veins to become lighter and disappear.

Although some patients may see complete response with one treatment session, several sessions may be necessary to provide the best possible results. Your vein doctor will discuss how many treatments you may need, which is typically 4-6 weeks after the initial sclerotherapy appointment. There is a possibility of spider vein recurrence or the development of new spider veins.
